A missing person case involving a Washington teenager has gained national attention as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) takes charge of the search. The teen, Shelbie Lynn Dwyer, was reported missing by her family last year after she failed to return from a trip to Mexico. Despite extensive efforts, the search for Shelbie has stretched into its 14th month, leaving her family in a state of anguish and uncertainty.
The family of Shelbie Lynn Dwyer, a resident of Des Moines, Washington, initially reported her missing to the local police department shortly after her disappearance in March 2023. At the time, Shelbie was 17 years old and had informed her family of her plans to visit Mexico with a friend. However, after she failed to maintain regular contact and eventually stopped communicating altogether, her family grew increasingly concerned and contacted law enforcement for assistance.
Due to the complexity and cross-border nature of the case, the FBI has now assumed responsibility for the investigation. Special Agent Steve Vienneau from the FBI's Seattle office provided an update on the case, revealing that the investigation has traced Shelbie's movements to Tijuana, where she reportedly traveled by car.
"We have credible information that suggests she arrived in Tijuana and then boarded a plane to Sinaloa, with a layover in Guadalajara, before landing in Culiacán,"
said Vienneau. The most recent information places Shelbie in Culiacán on March 29, 2023.
The U.S. State Department had issued a travel advisory at the time of Shelbie's disappearance, warning against the risks of violent crime and kidnappings in the region she was last known to be in. This has heightened concerns among investigators and her family about her safety.
"We are deeply worried because the area where she was last located is notorious for its dangers to Americans,"
Vienneau emphasized.
Shelbie's disappearance has left her family in a state of profound distress. Her mother, Stacy Hurt, has spoken openly about the emotional toll this ordeal has taken on her and her family.
"I miss her so much, and my heart aches for her every day,"
Hurt expressed.
"Not knowing where she is or what might have happened to her is unbearable."
Despite the pain, Shelbie's family remains hopeful that she will be found and returned home safely.
In a heartfelt appeal, Stacy Hurt conveyed her enduring love for her daughter and her determination to keep searching for answers.
"I want her to know that I love her, I miss her, and I think about her every single day,"
Hurt said.
"I am holding onto hope and faith that she will come home. I am not giving up on her."
The FBI is actively seeking any information that could lead to Shelbie's recovery. They are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for tips that result in finding her. The public is encouraged to contact their local FBI office, the nearest American embassy or consulate, or submit tips online at tips.fbi.gov if they have any information regarding Shelbie Lynn Dwyer's case.
As the investigation continues, Shelbie's family and law enforcement officials are urging anyone with knowledge of her whereabouts to come forward, in the hope of bringing her safely back home.
